I'm Lizz Summers, an Independent Speech & Language Therapist based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
I am an experienced therapist, specialising in treating adults with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. I have worked in the NHS for many years since qualifying with a First Class Degree (BSc Hons) in Speech & Language Therapy from DeMontfort University.
In 2015, I completed a Masters Degree in Clinical Research (with Distinction) and subsequently set up a private Speech & Language Therapy practice, delivering high quality, evidence based and person centred therapy in my client's own homes.
Alongside my private practice, I also work part time as a Lecturer in Speech & Language Therapy at City University of London (the largest provider of Speech & Language Therapy education in the UK), where I teach on topics including Biomedical Sciences, Voice Disorders, Head & Neck Cancer and Professional Studies. In 2017, I had an article published in an academic journal (available here), and I have given training and presentations across the UK and overseas.
I run my independent practice based from my home office in Huntingdon, where I live with my partner Matt and our little rescue dog, Molly.
I provide assessment and treatment for communication and swallowing difficulties arising from the following conditions:
Progressive Neurological Conditions (e.g. Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease)
Transgender and non-binary voice
Head & Neck Cancer
Laryngectomy (including Surgical Voice Restoration)
I am registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and am a member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the Association of Speech & Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP).
I also have an up to date, clear DBS check (Disclosure & Barring Service; the new form of CRB check).
In addition to my membership with the above organisations, I am a member of several Clinical Excellence Networks across the UK. These provide opportunities to meet with other Speech & Language Therapists working in similar fields, and to share expertise and best practice.
I offer services in people's homes, in care/residential homes and occasionally at my home office by prior arrangement.
While the majority of my clients are in Cambridgeshire, where required I also cover some areas of London and East Anglia. Travel to locations within 20 minutes' drive (each way) of central Huntingdon is free of charge. A travel surcharge applies to additional distances.
Speech & Language Therapy Assessment & Treatment
The service that your require will depend on your condition, your goals, and my clinical impression about what therapy or intervention will be beneficial. The best way to determine this is by conducting an initial assessment. During this assessment, we will have a detailed discussion, I will carry out a range of assessment activities, you can tell me what you are hoping for and ask any questions, and I can explain the most appropriate course of action. In some instances that might be arranging a course of therapy to target the problem. In others, it may involve teaching you and those around you strategies for how to manage the issue, or providing advice and education.
Clinical Supervision and Mentoring
I also offer support and supervision to other Speech & Language Therapists to develop and maintain their competencies. Supervision can be carried out in person or via Skype or telephone. I offer training and mentoring in career development for Speech & Language Therapists looking to specialise in Voice or Head & Neck Cancer, and those looking to embark on a Clinical Academic career (e.g. combining clinical work with research and/or lecturing). Mentoring and guidance is also available to those considering training as Speech & Language Therapists, or planning to apply for a Speech & Language Therapy University course.

"Lizz recently helped me work through some vocal strain and did an absolutely fantastic job. She is clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about her subject and just explains things in a really accessible engaging way. Can't recommend her highly enough." Tom J.
"Lizz made a huge difference to my life! I was referred to SLT with recurring voice loss and reduction in vocal quality and had regular appointments with Lizz for 4 months. The problem had become so bad that I was signed off work (I'm a teacher) and was becoming more and more depressed about the state I was in. Lizz, with her caring, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable approach, taught me how to find my voice again, and in doing so, helped me find myself again. Lizz made a huge difference to my life and I am so grateful. She is wonderful at what she does and truly cares for those she helps. Thank you Lizz - for everything!" Kate S.
"Thank you for all you have taught me, it has been so nice to have someone so caring and patient (...) thanks so much again". Davina W.
